The check engine light is one of the most ignored lights on the dash, and one of the most misunderstood. Sometimes it is a loose gas cap. Sometimes it is an early warning that saves you a much bigger repair. Here is how to tell how urgent it is and what to do next.
Steady light or flashing light?
- Steady light: the car has logged a fault. It is usually safe to drive for a short time, but get it checked soon, within days rather than weeks.
- Flashing light: this can mean an engine misfire that is damaging other parts. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get the vehicle checked as soon as you can. If the car is shaking badly or losing power, pull over somewhere safe and call.
Common reasons the light comes on
- A loose or worn gas cap
- A faulty oxygen or other engine sensor
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils causing a misfire
- A weak battery or charging problem affecting the car's electronics
- Emissions system faults
The light itself does not say which one. The car stores a fault code, and a scan tool reads it. The code points us in the right direction, but a real diagnosis means checking the actual part and conditions, not just reading the code.
What to check yourself first
- Make sure the gas cap is tight. Click it until it stops.
- Note how the car feels: rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, strange smells, or nothing at all.
- Note whether any other warning lights are on.
- If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive to a safe spot and book a diagnostic.
Why not just ignore it?
A small fault left alone can turn into a bigger one. A misfire can damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. A bad sensor can hurt fuel economy. And while the light is on, it can hide a new problem that appears later.
We diagnose at your location
You do not need to book a shop slot and drive in with a warning light on. We come to your home, workplace, or parking spot in Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, Richmond, and nearby areas. We scan the vehicle, check what the codes point to, and explain what is wrong and what the next step is. If the repair can be done on-site, we do it there. If it needs a shop, we tell you before you pay for anything extra.
Call (604) 606-7509 and tell us what the car is doing. We come to your vehicle.
